News From the Art World: Here They Come. Trine and Kristian attending Søndejylland’s School of Art
Trine and Kristian on BGK!
In the beginning of March a group of students, with Helle Binding and I, visited Sønderborg to take a closer look at Sønderjylland’s School of Art, where they had opened the doors for the public.

BGK means Billedkunstnerisk GrundKursus (Basic Class of Visual Arts), and in Sønderborg they offer a one-year course as opposed to other schools in Denmark, where this course runs for three years. The last couple of years, Løgumkloster Højskole and BGK have tried to find the right model for our cooperation. We refer to BGK on our website, and in Sønderborg they are sending out material about the Folk High School to those promising talents, who unfortunately could not be accepted onto the school during the admission tests in the summer.
The visit in Sønderborg was interesting. The School of Art is situated in a huge old villa, with a living atmosphere of creativity. The student’s exhibition led us through labyrinthine hallways in both basement and attic. But the visit probably evoked the biggest excitement in Trine, who had a talk with the head of the school, Thomas Lunau. Trine became during springtime more and more certain about applying the School – and such a talk can under these circumstances wake the butterflies in one’s stomach.
But whether butterflies in the stomach or not, so both Trine – and later Kristian – became during the springtime sure, that taking this course was it! So since LK10 finished, they worked hard choosing the right artworks for the judgment. So they both awaited the calling in for a talk. First Trine – and then Kristian. And the joy would not stop, as all got the message, that they actually both could look forward to begin on the school in the first days of September.

So now it is serious. Until May 2011 they will experience artistic absorption, drawings modules, pictorial analysis, art history, painting, photo- and video art, spatial and conceptual based expressions, guiding, clarification, and possibly preparation for application on a higher artistic school – or where life might lead them.
When I ask Trine, what she is looking forward to, she answers: “Mostly I am looking forward to seeing, where I might be in May next year, because I am certain, I will learn a lot more and become even better artistically/technically and more certain about myself. I am looking forward to get a better insight to art and how it is formed. It is actually hard to say precisely, because I don’t now, what is awaiting me, but I have butterflies in the stomach, when I think about being assisted constructively and gaining more consciousness on my creativity. It will be so cool!”
Kristian, who stopped by the Folk High School, the day he was accepted onto the school, says: “I am mostly looking forward to learn new things. Going down there, meet the other students, and get to know them. And then just go there to paint…” (The latest update tells us, that he is also looking forward to draw).

From all of us, we congratulate you both. Well done! We are looking forward to see, what will happen the next year – and the next art class on Løgumkloster Højskole will certainly visit BGK in March 2011. Maybe more LK-students will end up as creative, artistic inspirational sources all around the world – which is just what the world needs!
