LK11 - everything is “awesome”!

So, LK11 has been around for a while now. Some might know that once the long course is running, time becomes a very precious thing. This year is no exception. So the E-mag has had its winter dwelling the last two month. But with young people running around the school, the energy again fills the rooms. People are having nice days; for LK11 everything is “awesome”!!

This morning, one of the reporters of tr@f entered the school through the glass door close to the B-wing. And there, in the glass corridor between “torvet” and the B-wing, Bouba sat on a chair enjoying the beautiful morning sun rising. In this light even the smoke from the chemney of the factory looked idyllic. Today is a beautiful day in Løgumkloster! Not all days have been beautiful like this since LK11 entered the school on January 9th, but all days have been awesome.

Words are important, but some words get special meanings for certain groups, and for LK11 one of these words is “awesome”. It should be spoken with the weight of seriousness and deep humor. When so done, our world changes and our bodies are filled with positive energy. And that is, surely, an awesome feeling. So, tr@f thinks this is great. The word “awesome” has become more than a word, it is now the symbol of a community, a symbol of LK11. And it is a good symbol. It is important to have good symbols. If the symbol, for instance, had been the sentence “go hang yourself”, then there might have been a more negative environment on the school. Maybe there is really something about this place, Løgumkloster, that moves people to speak out positive words. Another example is the word of LK10.

The word - or words - of LK10 was “pure niceness”. This was brilliant in the same way as “awesome”. The important aspect of the words has nothing to do with a correct use, grammatically speaking, but with the correct use within this group of people. The brilliant thing about “awesome” and “pure niceness” is that when spoken, a very boring subject or a bad piece of art is accepted as something unique within the group. Everyone is allowed to speak the word (except maybe in certain situations the teachers), so all students can in this way be accepted and pulled into the fellowship of “awesome” or “pure niceness”. Words create realities, and the reality created through these words is certainly unique: It is a reality of positive equality, where differences are accepted as awesome; we could call it unity through diversity.

So, LK11, keep up the good spirit, you are all awesome!

This article is based on a kind of field study, and if anyone likes it, I would like you to think back on your own time at Løgumkloster Højskole. Which words became symbols for you? Please send me the words, and maybe we can write a history or an antology of the high school based on these words. Email the words to my mail: martin@lkhojskole.dk
